1. Module learning:
Having gone through the course was definitely a fruitful learning experience for me. Reflecting on the two goals that I have set for myself during the start of the course. I can honestly say that I have achieved both my objectives as I have grown to be a much better confident speaker and writer. In terms of non-verbal communication skills, going through the weekly assignments and instructional units has helped equipped me the necessary skills of technical writing. Through constant practicing, it has helped me hone my writing skills and abilities significantly. Another essential learning process that I learnt was to evaluate and learn through my fellow peers. By assessing one another, we can get inspiration as well as identify and learn mistakes from one another, making it very beneficial towards our learning. In terms of verbal communication skills, one thing that I have learnt is that preparation is essential before any presentation is carried out. Having group rehearsals is one way, but for myself, I prepare better by rehearsing in front of a mirror or a live audience. Although I am a much confident speaker as compared to before, there is still room for improvements. With more future presentation to come and more opportunities to learn from others, I hope to achieve in my newly set goal of becoming a professional speaker by the time I graduate from SIT.
2. Project learning
Teamwork is one of the key focus in my learning for this project. Going through the research project proved to be a challenge for my team with a shortage of a team member. With only two members in the group, the workload distributed equally had to be double. However, even with the disadvantage, it did falter my group from delivering a good presentation and writing a good report. When my team did our mock presentation, it did not turn out well as the team was not well prepared. The visuals were not professional and were no proper transitions from team members which displayed poor teamwork. Through the feedbacks that were received, we improve our visuals and schedule rehearsals to better prepare for the final presentation. When it came to the final presentation, we performed much better than expected. Through this experience, it has become evident to me that teamwork is vital for any team to succeed. Having strong teamwork can help to enhance the team skills of coordination and communication, which is something beneficial i learnt.
3. The Presentation Showcase:
Although my team did not present for the showcase, there were still many key learning points to gain from watching others present. One of the groups that really interest me was the Pedestrians Early Warning System (PEWS). Their team did well in their presentation delivery as they were able to convince and persuade the audience on their proposed solution. During the Q&A session, they were able to respond to questions that were asked of them with ease and confidence, which demonstrates how knowledgeable they are on their content. The visuals they used were professional yet simple, which was easy to comprehend and follow. What made it even better was that they also included a video animation to help illustrate their solution and help the audience visualize better. What really caught my attention was the final group presenter. He articulated his voice clearly and appeared more confident and firmer in his delivery, unlike the rest of his nervous team members. He also made use of hand gestures and signs to captivate the attention of the audience while keeping it very minimal, which was excellent. Many of their team members were nervous, which reflected poorly on the team, however, by having more practice and rehearsals, they will be able to perform better. In overall, the team did a great job for their presentation showcase.
